UIDAI to decide fresh deadline of Aadhaar linking; will talk to RBI, TRAI

The Aadhaar issuing authority, UIDAI will consult various government ministries, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to decide if there is need to extend the current deadline of March 31.

Earlier, the deadline for linking Aadhaar was December 31, 2017. Later, it was extended till March 31, 2018. This was done to allow the Supreme Court to decide on a bunch of petitions against the mandatory linking of Aadhaar.

Recently, UIDAI announced it will soon come up with virtual ID to keep Aadhaar number confidential.

Aadhaar has been in news as privacy activists have been demanding that linkage of Aadhaar numbers not be made mandatory, citing concerns of inadequate privacy and security.
