Times Internet buys Korea’s MX Player; will re-enter OTT segment

As the OTT segment is witnessing big boom due to cheap data and smartphones, Times Internet has bought South Korean app MX Player for $200 million to re-enter the segment.

According to a report by the Ken, Times Internet will buy users as part of the deal with MX Player. It will look at acquiring content besides using in-house properties for the same.

Earlier too, Times Internet had a phase in the OTT segment  when it had launched a subscription OTT service called Box TV in 2013. However, the service was shut down in 2016 following poor response.

Times Internet properties are doing fine and reach over 232 million unique visitors a month who collectively account for 10.4 billion page views and 10.0 billion minutes spent across web and mobile, with businesses across news, entertainment, sports, local, e-commerce, classifieds, startup investments, local partnerships, and more.
