COAI not happy with separate licensee for in-flight communication services

Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has said that it opposes the telecom regulator’s (TRAI) recommendations for creation of a separate licensee category for offering in-flight communication services. Recently, the regulator has recommended internet access through Wi-Fi to be allowed during flight, adding that making calls can be allowed once an aircraft reaches an altitude of 3,000 meters.

COAI said mobile phone operators are best placed to provide them.

Rajan Mathews, director, COAI, said:  “We do not support any separate category of IFC service provider. We have on ground spectrum licences and they are sufficient for providing in-flight connectivity.”

According to Mathew, in-flight connectivity (IFC) should only be permitted over licensed spectrum, or bandwidth which is currently being used for mobile phone services, thus also opposing the regulator's suggestions to use airwaves being currently used for satellite services.

But Mathew also lauded TRAI’s move to allow in-flight communication for passengers, He said IFC will significantly improve passenger experience, enhance tourism and bolster non-aeronautical revenues for the airline industry.
