State governments make 100 websites accessible

The government’s thrust on Accessible India Campaign (AIC) is bringing good results as various state governments have made 100 websites accessible for persons with disabilities. The announcement was made by the Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawar Chand Gehlot on the occasion of 'National Conference on Improving Accessibility' in New Delhi, on 19January.

The disabled rights organizations and activists have been demanding websites to be made accessible for true inclusion. Accessible Websites enable Persons with Disabilities to perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the Web, and that they can contribute to the Web.

The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan) initiated a “Website Accessibility Project” for State Government/Union Territories under Accessible India Campaign through ERNET India, an autonomous scientific society under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), to make total 917 websites accessible and providing funds for the same. Now 100 accessible websites are made accessible under the project.

The telecom regulator TRAI too issued a Consultation paper in Dec 2017 on “How to make ICT accessible”.
