TRAI to issue recommendations for in-flight connectivity

Air travelers may soon enjoy wi-fi onboard aircraft as the telecom regulator may soon issue recommendations on allowing use of Wi-Fi services during flights, and also plans to send its inputs to the telecom department for the upcoming new telecom policy.


The recommendations will come by December end. TRAI will set the broad parameters of rules for in flight connectivity which at the moment is barred within Indian air space and domestic airlines.

TRAI Chairman RS Sharma said on the sidelines of an event of Broadband India Forum on 12 December, "Recommendations on inflight connectivity will come out by the year end, which is in next 15 days," TRAI

Sharma added that TRAI has created four working groups within the regulatory body which will contribute their outlooks to DoT.

TRAI will also give its view for the new telecom policy (NTP) which is being drafted by the telecom department. The DoT plans to bring the first draft by the year end and the policy by March next year.
