NDTV to prune its staff by 25%; mobile journalism killing jobs

To lessen its financial stress and restructure the organization, the broadcaster NDTV is planning to cut down on its workforce by 25%; it will focus on its core TV and digital business. Mobile journalism too is killing jobs in media sector.

NDTV has retrenched 60 to 70 employees of which around 35 camerapersons became redundant with the introduction of high-grade smartphones. NDTV noted that its reporters across the country are now using mobile phones for the fastest and most efficient delivery of breaking news.

According to company, “Given our reprioritization, our workforce has to be altered too — over the next month, we are considering reduction of workforce up to 25%. We thank these departing employees for their contribution and hard work and wish them the very best.”

It further said: “The strategy we are adopting calls for a far leaner operation which will feed only our core business: our English and Hindi news channels, and NDTV Convergence and its digital teams that run our news and other apps and websites.”
