DoT & ISPs partner to battle child porn on internet

Child porn is a big menace on internet despite many national and international laws against it. Now to battle it hard, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Internet service providers such as Vodafone India and Tata Communications have partnered with international groups such as the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF).

DoT has directed Internet service providers (ISPs) to block as many as 4,694 URLs (uniform resource locators) containing material linked to child sexual abuse, operators have come up with ways to ensure that subscribers do not have access to videos or materials that show child pornography.

Manoj Sinha, the telecom minister said in the Lok Sabha on 27 December that the government asked ISPs to block 1,791URLs, including Facebook pages and YouTube videos, in 2016 and 2017 (till November 30).

Sinha said DoT had also expedited steps to block 4,700 or so URLs based on data provided by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). ISPs currently block Internet websites and URLs using various tools but the telecom minister conceded “it isn’t technically feasible” to block specific items or content contained in a particular URL or webpage.
