The central government is expected to release the National Telecom Policy 2018 by March with due consideration of rapid technological advancement and special attention to satellite broadband that could lead to digital empowerment of 1.3 billion Indians in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious Digital India program.
According to Emanuela Lecchi, Head of Public Policy, APAC, GSMA, India could be a role model for many countries which could replicate local developments.
He added: “The National Telecom Policy involves several aspects coming together, and the government is taking a step in right direction.”
GSMA, which is London based, represents more than 800 telecom service providers worldwide including India’s Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India, Idea Cellular and new comer Reliance Jio Infocomm.
The organization expects India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to reduce the multiple taxes and levies including the Universal Service Obligation (USO) charge in its new telecom policy, besides rolling out a spectrum sale roadmap.
Lecchi said: “Industry is at difficulty in terms of erosion of revenue, and operators will not be able to take out lot of amount for spectrum buyout in a shorter term. Consolidation is good for India that will help players to focus on wider network. Fragmented networks have always been a difficult preposition and that too with such gigantic projects such as Digital India.”
