West Bengal CM launches a committee to address LCOs’ issues

To address the issues of the local cable operators (LCOs) in West Bengal, the chief minister of the state Ms. Mamata Banerjee has set-up a committee, which includes Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim, Labour Minister Malay Ghatak, Youth and Sports Minister Arup Biswas, the Commissioner of Police, and representatives of broadcasters and cable operators.

Recently, thousands of cable TV operators from across West Bengal met the CM at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Indoor Stadium to raise their issues. During the meeting, the cable operators told her that their financial condition worsened after digital addressable system (DAS) was introduced.

The CM also asked LCOs to come under the fold of MSMEs and announced several social security schemes for them and their families. As part of security, every cable operator will get health insurance worth Rs 5 lakh. Cable operators will also get Rs 1500 per month and one-time payment of Rs 2 lakh. To avail this benefit, cable operators have to pay Rs 30 per month up to the age of 60 years.

The CM asked the LCOs to exercise caution on fake news being circulated on the social media. She also asked them to stay vigilant and urged them not to beam news items involving communal violence that can fuel trouble and unrest elsewhere.
