Govt promises additional capacity to facilitate migration of DTH ops to indigenous satellites within 3 years

The minister of state (MoS) in the ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said in the Lok Sabha that there will be enough satellite capacity on Indian satellites in the next three years to facilitate the migration of Direct To Home (DTH) operators from foreign to indigenous satellites.

He added the DTH service providers are using 111 transponders including 42 transponders on indigenous INSAT/GSAT satellites and 69 on foreign satellites. There is a registered demand for additional about 64 transponders for immediate future.

The MoS said: “It is expected that over a period of next three years adequate capacity would be added through Indian satellites to facilitate migration of foreign capacity to Indian capacity.”

He added that the ministry has not received any proposal from DTH operators for sharing of satellite transponders and earth station facilities with other DTH players and distribution platforms.

According to data reported to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) by broadcasters, there is a significant growth in the number of high definition (HD) Satellite Pay TV channels. The number has grown from 3 in the year 2010 to 83 in the year 2017.
