TRAI differs from MIB over DTH licensing norms

While the telecom regulator TRAI wants to retain the licence tenure of DTH operators at 20 years, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) wants to reduce it to 10 years. On entry fee too, both differ. While the Ministry wants the entry fee of operators to be increased from Rs 10 crore to Rs 25 crore, the TRAI wants to keep it at Rs 10 crore.

The Ministry has been seeking to change the various regulations as regards the operations of the DTH and as such has been seeking to bring in a Cabinet note with new regulations which are also being opposed by the operators.

The TRAI has categorically told the ministry that its earlier recommendations would stand.

TRAI also told the MIB that DTH is a highly capital-intensive sector and requires investments not only in the initial stages but also in the latter stages of the operations and the investors look for certainty in government policies for continuity in operations.
