TRAI issues Show-cause notices to telcos on call drops

The telecom regulator TRAI has issuedshow-cause notices to a few telcos over call drops and inability to meet prescribed benchmarks under the new quality of service rules in some circles. TRAI has given them time till March 21to present their side of the case.

The TRAI chairman RS Sharma said: “TRAI will follow due process before imposing penalties, which can well increase in quantum if the same carriers continued to violate quality of service (QoS) norms in the same circles in January-March quarter.”

He added: "The January to March data is also expected to come next month, and this time, the financial disincentives could increase if one operator does not meet the benchmarks in two circles and defaults consecutively."

The new QoSnorms prescribe up to Rs 10 lakh penalty per circle in a quarter for violation, and have become effective on October 1, 2017 and the first quarterly report came out last month.
