BCCI to e-auction telecast rights of national team matches to be held in India

The two mega broadcasters, Star India and Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN) are eyeing the telecast rights of national team matches to be held in the country. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will e-auction it on March 27. The rights include all international and domestic cricket tournaments including the Ranji Trophy and the Irani Cup, to be held in India until March 31, 2023.

Vinit Karnik, business head at GroupM’s entertainment and sports division ESP Properties, said: “BCCI’s media rights are among the most premium live sports content in the world of cricket and hence is expected to be fiercely competitive.”

As per media sources, Reliance Jio, Google, Facebook, Amazon Prime Video and DSport also filled the tender documents. BCCI has kept the base price for television and digital rights at Rs 33 crore and Rs 7 crore per match, respectively, lower than the existing payout of Rs 43 crore per match. The total number of matches during the five-year window is expected to be around 100.

Both Star and Sony are having handful of rights of sports properties. Star has IPL rights, International Cricket Council (ICC) rights and ownership of Pro Kabaddi League (PKL), and Indian Super League (IPL), while Sony has rights of seven international cricket boards (Australia, England, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Pakistan and West Indies), along with FIFA, La Liga and WWE.
