Govt approves financial grant for 5G test bed project by IITs, IISc

The telecom Minister Manoj Sinha told the Parliament on 28 March that the government has approved financial grant for a project to set up indigenous 5G test bed by Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc).


The project includes setting up of an 'open 5G Test Bed' for Indian companies, academia and is likely to enhance the national capability in telecom technology and manufacturing.

Sinha said that the project has three year duration and involves a total budget of over Rs 224 crore, he added.

He said that the project will see eight institutes collaborating, including Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT), IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IISc Bangalore and Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER).

In another development, the telecom department has asked telcos and internet service providers such as Bharti Airtel and Tata Communications, and corporations such as Indian Oil and ONGC, to vacate the spectrum they hold in the 3300-3400 Mhz band which will be used for 5G services.
