SC gives people big relief; Aadhaar mandatory only for availing of subsidies

Giving a big relief to the people, the Supreme Court on March 13 indefinitely extended the March 31 deadline for linking Aadhaar to bank accounts and mobile phones and ordered that except for disbursing subsidies, the government and states cannot insist on Aadhaar for any service, including issuance of passports.

The SC added that the extension will be in place till the court delivers its final judgment. The bench is in the midst of hearing petitions challenging the constitutional validity of Aadhaar.

The SC said: “We direct that the interim order passed on December 15 shall stand extended till the matter is finally heard and the judgment (of the court) is pronounced,” it said and clarified that the indefinite extension of Aadhaar linkage deadline “shall apply, besides the schemes of the ministries/departments of the Union government, to all state governments in similar terms”.
