Airtel goes to TDSAT against TRAI’s show cause notice

The leading telecom operator Bharti Airtel has moved to the Telecom Disputes Settlement & Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) against TRAI’s show cause notice. The telco is challenging the telecom regulator TRAI’s recent show cause notice which asked Airtel to share details of non-transparent and discriminatory tariffs that it has allegedly offered consumers.

In the notice, TRAI had sought details on the kind of tariffs Airtel has offered, their timing and the circles in which they were launched, when the tariffs were reported to the regulator and to how many customers they had been issued.

TRAI had given Airtel till March 25 to respond to the show cause notice that was sent based on complaints from consumers and rival carriers.

Now in its letter to TDSAT, Airtel has requested it to direct TRAI to exercise restraint when the issue is pending adjudication before the telecom tribunal, and a decision on interim relief is to take place.

The letter said: “TRAI in such circumstances ought not to enforce compliance and attempt a fait accompli.”
