India TV in docks as NBSA issues orders on complaints against its show ‘Operation Halala’

Rajat Sharma’s news channel India TV is in trouble as the News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA) has issued orders on complaints filed against news broadcasters for false reporting to spike its TRP.

In its programme ‘Operation Halala’, India TV had run a sting operation on 15 April 2017 alleging that Maulana Sufi Taslim who was purportedly associated Jama Masjid and Madrasa Seemapuri was exploiting women by conducting Halala for Rs 1 lakh with divorced Muslim women to make money.

The complainants alleged that there is no person by the name Maulana Sufi Taslim neither was there any Halala centre in the masjid. India TV held its ground stating that the information that there is no person by the name Maulana Sufi Taslim at the masjid is incorrect.

When asked by the NBSA, India TV said that neither it nor the reporter has any information about the Maulana.

The NBSA in its ruling said India TV must provide an opportunity to the management committee of the masjid to give their version in the matter. It also asked the channel to give Mohammed Shafeeq, the member of the masjid’s committee, three minutes time to give their version of the story.

Complaints were also filed against Zee News, AajTak, India TV, India Today and ABP News for wrong reporting. It was about a video ‘Jan Gan Man Ki Baat Episode 46: Bodily Integrity and Fake News’ posted by TheWire.in, the complainant said that the news channels had reported about some action purported to have been taken by Indian Army which in fact never happened which according to complainant amounts to unverified information on sensitive issue relating to Kashmir.

But answering the complaint, the above mentioned broadcasters stated that the information showed in the video was provided by a verified source like Press Trust of India.NBSA closed the complaint issuing a warning to the broadcasters that they should exercise more care and caution in regard to sensitive reports.

Zee Rajasthan News was also found guilty of airing a wrong report against DR IC Mittal Hospital, Ganganagar. The channel had broadcast news stating that a large number of foetuses were found in the hospital which later turned out to be false.

The NBSA asked the regional channel to air regret as per the text to be furnished by NBSA on the date and time indicated by NBSA.

Zee News was also issued notice for its show-FatehKa Fatwa. The complainants had alleged that the programme related to Islam and hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community. After the hearing deliberation, NBSA decided to close the complaints with an observation that the broadcaster should exercise care and caution in regard to such broadcasts.
