Telcos aggressive on Content partnerships with OTT players

With cheap data rates and easy affordability of smartphones, a paradigm shift is taking place where telcos are partnering major OTT players to streamline content to their customers. As per latest research, average data consumption per user per month has increased 10 times in the past one year post arrival of Reliance Jio.

It is a win-win situation for both OTT players as well as telcos.

According to Satyajit Sinha, Research Analyst, Counterpoint Research, “Average data consumption per user per month has increased 10 times in the past one year post arrival of Reliance Jio and this has drastically changed the internet usage behaviour of millions of Indian users.”

DipankarGhoshal, National Head, VAS and Content, Vodafone India, commented: “Video viewing through data currently stands at 50% which is expected to go up to 70%. Vodafone has seen a three-fold higher consumption of data for customers who adopt and use video platforms,”

According to another expert, “At the end of the day, service providers want a readymade audience to proliferate their content and telcos have a captive audience in that space. Telcos, on the other hand are on the lookout for immersive content that will lead to a ‘walled garden’ – thus ensuring that subscribers do not move on to OTT players. Added to that is the fact that telcos are keen on gaining incremental wallet share from subscribers – beyond the normal recharge or the postpaid bill.”
