Discovery gets approval from European Commission for its acquisition of Scripps

Discovery has got the green light from the European Commission for its proposed acquisition of Scripps. Discovery and Scripps provide basic pay-TV channels to TV distributors in the European Economic Area (EEA).

Scripps is active in the UK and runs UKTV jointly with the BBC; and in Poland, via TVN, which is a Polish media company acquired by Scripps 3 years back.

As there was some competition concerns, Discovery committed to making TVN24 and its sister channel TVN24 Bis available to current and future TV distributors in Poland for a reasonable fee determined by reference to comparable agreements. This commitment will remain in place for a period of 7 years.

In its final report, the Commission’s investigation said that the proposed transaction would raise no competition issues in the UK given the limited overlap between the companies’ activities.
