Zee Media brings hybrid model for smaller markets

Zee Media Corp is planning to build hybrid model for its regional news channels in the smaller and developing markets, offering them space to grow in two different areas.
Called ‘terrestrial entertainment network’ or TEN, the model is a concept whereby the channel offers a mix of news and current affairs with a punch of localised general entertainment content.

Zee Media has already applied the model to three of its regional news channels—Zee Rajasthan Plus Marudhara (Rajasthan), the recently rebranded Zee Purvaiya (earlier Maurya TV) in Bihar and Jharkhand, and the newly launched Zee Kalinga in Odisha. The format will soon be adopted for the Uttar Pradesh- and Uttarakhand-specific channel Zee Sangam.
Zee Media CEO Alok Agrawal while speaking with media stated that, the channels compete with both news and entertainment channels in their respective markets. Apart from news, there is original general entertainment produced in the state for people of the state.
On the reason behind adopting TEN, Agrawal said that though there is demand for both news and entertainment in the regional markets within the Hindi-speaking belt, some markets may not have room for both pure-play news and pure-play entertainment channels.
Industry experts say that Zee Media is adopting the strategy for markets that are small and cannot sustain a full-fledged news channel and where it does not have presence in the general entertainment space. In developed markets like West Bengal and Maharashtra, Zee Media will have pure-play news channels.
