TACTV to set up a digital head-end with conditional access system

The TACTV will be awarding a contract to set up a digital head-end with CAS and subscriber management system, and it will enable provisioning of 20 lakh set top boxes in the metro city Chennai.
The state has been a hotbed of cable wars, and for this reason the lucrative television entertainment business to cable homes has always been in the news as well. According to the last census, there has been a 48 per cent increase in the number of TV sets in Tamil Nadu and in terms of television penetration, the state is second only to New Delhi, the Indian capital, which makes it a big market.

The Thamizhaga Cable TV Operators General Welfare Association president P. Sakilan points out that at least 27 lakh subscribers in Chennai would not be able to pay Rs. 1,500-Rs. 2,000 for the set-top box.
“In this context, we appeal to the State to ensure successful transition to digitisation by subsidising set-top boxes for these segments of the population,” said Mr. Sakilan.
