Reliance’s low-cost tablets to be disruptive for the 3G operators: Gartner

The inexpensive Long Term Evolution tablets and tariffs to be introduced by the Reliance Industries may turn out to be disruptive for 3G operators, says the research agency Gartner.
The company intends to introduce a Long Term Evolution (LTE) tablet for the price of Rs 3,500 (about $60) in the Indian market. The company has also partnered with Datawind for the production, says the research and advisory firm Gartner’s report.

The Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology, is also known as 4G, is standard for high-speed data access. 4G is 4-10 times faster than 3G, and its licences were issued to six operators, and four of them are also looking to introduce these services. “RIL is all set to create turbulence in the market. The low price of the devices, cheap data plans and a planned nation-wide deployment would be disruptive trend for the existing 3G service providers,” Gartner Principal Research Analyst Rishi Tejpal said while talking to a business magazine.
The 3G operators have paid huge sums for spectrum acquisition and it will it extremely difficult for them to compete at the Reliance price levels. “RIL is yet to announce the launch dates of its 4G plans. We expect that the commercial launch will happen before the end of 2012 or sometime in early 2013,” he added.
