Power company in Assam demands pole rental from Cable Operators

Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) has asked Cable Operators to pay Rs 25 for each electric pole a month for installing cable wires. Company had set a deadline of October 7 to clear the dues placing Cable Operators in difficult situation
The Greater Guwahati Cable TV Operators' Association (GGCTOA) approached the APDCL to extend the deadline. The company has decided to convene a meeting with the GGCTOA on October 22 to listen to their plea  however the APDCL  is firm on its decision to make all operators  pay  for poles they are using.

According to sources about 31,000 electric poles in Guwahati are used by cable TV operators for providing connections to subscribers. So far there was no rule for such a payment. Cable TV operators are using the electric poles for free since the service was launched in the city in the nineties.
ADPCL has also laid down the norms on use of  electric poles and have asked the operators to tie the cables only in the prescribed manner and not haphazardly, the way they have been doing till date. This has been done in order to ensure safety of power workers and the public.
According to media reports ADPCL has warned that if the operators do not adhere to the directives of the company, it will not hesitate to disconnect the cables that are stringed through the electric poles.
The cable operators have denied having received any approved plans and expressed that Rs 25 per pole per month is a little too much for them to pay, particularly considering the new DAS regulations that have reduced their revenue share to less than half. If charged from the public, the monthly fee of cable customers will have to be hiked significantly," said secretary of GGCTOA, Iquebal Ahmed.
The aasociation has decided to put across all their points to ADPCL and discussed better deal on 22nd October when the meeting with the power company takes place.
