4-5 years before mass-market 4K TV

Findings from research firm Dataxis suggest that global shipments of 4K TV sets will surpass 5 per cent of the total annual TV shipments in 2017, while the installed base of 4K TV sets in Europe, North America and mature Asian markets, such as Japan and South Korea, will also reach 5 per cent in 2018.
According to Dataxis, the plethora of 4K TV screens already available from different vendors – with increasing focus on 55-65 inch displays and cheaper price points – is creating consumer demand and driving 4K TV sales as existing flat screen and HD displays are replaced.
The company’s report, 4K TV Market and Forecasts (2013-2018), estimates there will be 2.2 million 4K TV households at the end of 2013, rising to 66.2 million by end-2018. Sales of cheaper, domestic 4K TV sets in China will also help push the Asia Pacific region to become the single largest market for 4K TV by 2016 – accounting for 42 per cent of global 4K TV households.
“The recent standardisation of HEVC/H.265 will improve video quality and double the data compression ratio compared to H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, making it possible to offer native 4K TV content across all TV access platforms,” observes Gavin Patterson, Research Director at Dataxis. “Pay-TV companies are most likely to invest heavily in 4K TV so they can compete against OTA broadcasts and OTT services, with the battle for dominance likely to be reignited between satellite and cable operators.”
However, Dataxis claims that only 58 per cent of households with a 4K TV set end-2018 will have the potential to access native 4K TV programming from their TV providers – equivalent to 38.16 million households. “The first generation of 4K TV set owners will have to rely on media players, games consoles, and compressed download systems to view 4K content, although many channels have already started running their own 4K TV trials to launch programming around the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics,” says Patterson.
Tata Sky tie up with Ten HD
In a bid to increase its reach, sports channel Ten HD has struck a deal with DTH player Tata Sky. Rajesh Sethi, CEO - Sports Business ZEEL, said the availability of Ten HD on Tata Sky would offer sports content covering cricket, football, tennis, athletics, among others, to its HD subscribers. Some of the key sporting events slated for telecast include cricket from South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies, 2014 Commonwealth Games, 2014 Asian Games, US Open, ATP, WTA, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, French League, Moto GP, Tour de France and WWE, among others, he said.

HRD Ministry to launch 50 Educational Channels
The Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) would soon launch 50 DTH educational channels.
Secretary, Department of Higher Education, HRD, on Tuesday said that these channels would be different from the existing programmes on air including GyanDarshan, as new one would be more interactive. He said these channels would air programmes, which would be live, and not pre recorded. Saying that the new initiatives would be one of the largest anywhere in the world of its kind, he said that the number of the channels would be increased later to one thousand.
He said that the Ministry has spent more than one billion dollars for ICT, and over 400 universities and twenty thousand colleges have been linked with bandwidth. Highlighting the potential of the National Programme on National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT), he said that the entire country could be made into a big classroom, which would help improve quality of instructions in engineering colleges particularly belonging to the remote areas.
He said that the Ministry might approach AICTE to make on-line education mandatory and integral part of education system.Asking to promote virtual lab, Thakur said it should be possible to share classes from IITs to other engineering colleges by making the system more user friendly.
