Court remands Maran aide, 2 others to judicial custody till February 4

A Special Court handling CBI cases on 22 January remanded till February 4 to judicial custody an aide of former Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran and two others over misuse of telephone lines at Maran’s residence during his term in office. They have been lodged in the Puzhal central prison in Chennai.
Former Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran’s Additional Private Secretary V. Gowthaman, Sun TV’s Chief Technical Officer S. Kannan and Electrician K.S. Ravi were arrested by the CBI’s Special Task Force officials at Chennai on 21 January.
The agency had registered a case on July 23, 2013, under various provisions of the IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, against Mr. Maran, the then Chief General Manager of BSNL and a few others.
The case was that Mr. Maran and BSNL officials entered into a criminal conspiracy and caused a huge loss to the State exchequer. It was alleged that the Chief General Manager during 2004-06 and the Chief General Manager during 2006-2007, along with a few officials of Chennai Telephones, provided Mr. Maran a number of high-end telecommunication facilities for which no bills were raised. The connections were allegedly used by Mr. Maran for the Sun TV network owned by his elder brother Kalanidhi Maran.
