In its recommendations to the Department of Communication (DoT), the telecom regulator TRAI has reiterated that it should be entrusted the job of regulating the information communication technology (ICT) and the broadcasting sector as part of the National Telecom Policy (NTP) 2018.
TRAI had taken feedback from a cross-section of stakeholders including broadcasting companies for its recommendations. TRAI has also agreed to rename the NTP 2018 as Information and Communication Technology Policy 2018.
Many broadcasters wanted a separate authority to regulate them. They had also pointed out that the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology has suggested creating a separate regulator for the broadcasting sector.
Star India had argued that having a converged regulator for ICT and broadcasting there is always the risk of “false equivalence” being drawn between the two sectors.
