DTH hit by 26.45 mn inactive subscribers: TRAI

The second phase of digitisation has seen a major churn in the active subscriber base of the direct-to-home (DTH) players as digital cable has made inroads into the subscribers’ homes. As per the data issued by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in its Telecom Service Performance Indicator report for the period of July-September 2013, a whopping 43.57 per cent or 26.45 million subscriber have become inactive.
Six month after the deadline of the second phase, while the total registered subscriber base of the DTH companies has swollen to 60.71 million, only 34.26 million or 56.4 per cent are active as of 30 September 2013.

The information provided by TRAI also indicates that in the three-month period (July–September 2013), even the total subscriber base has seen a slow growth, and all the DTH players, put together, have added a mere 1.82 million subscribers. By the end of June 2013, the total subscriber reached 58.89 million.
The DTH services are provided by public broadcaster Free Dish and six other private DTH players including Dish TV, Tata Sky, Airtel Digital TV, Videocon d2h, Sun Direct and Reliance Digital TV.
