Phased black out of 1.80 lakh subscribers in Kolkata

TRAI’s firm stance on submission of CAF forms by 23 August has resulted in 1.80 lakh defaulters in Kolkata facing a blackout of TV channels on their TV screens. After the several warnings and extensions it had given for the submission of Consumer Application Form which had to be mandatorily submitted while connecting the Set top Box to air the channels as per the Viewer’s choice. TRAI is in no mood to give any further extension.
The MSO’s and LCO’s had failed collectively to submit the applications by the 23rd August deadline, which resulted in crores of loss to the government.

TRAI has now directed the service providers to disconnect the connection of televisions of customers who had failed to submit the CAF. Around 1.80lakh viewers started facing black out on 24 August.
Den Networks, Hathway Cable and Datacom and Manthan Broadband Services cut maximum number of cable connections on August 24.
TRAI has also asked the MSO’s to submit details of TV connections that were running illegally.
MSOs have now decided to switch off connections of defaulter subscribers in phases.
Siticable is disconnecting 15000 connections at one time while manthan Broadband has disconnected 30000 connections so far.
The Manthan Broadband Services said, “We had disconnected the services of 30000 customers on 24 August which had caused significant alarm and has resulted in increase in the collection of CAF’s.
