The three days (April 3-5) BCCI e-bidding saw much upheaval but at the end Star India has succeeded to retain the global media rights for India cricket with a whopping Rs 6138.1 crore bid. Star India is already the rights holder of IPL matches.
The three-day bidding war saw Star, Sony and Reliance Jio. Sony was the runner-up with a Rs 6118.59 crore bid which was just Rs 19.51 crore lower than Star’s bid. This was the first ever e-auction of sports rights in India.
BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary said: “The final consolidated bid was Rs 6138.1 crore, which translates to a per match figure of Rs 60.18 crore over 102 matches.”
Now, Star will have to pay Rs 60.18 crore per match for 102 games in the five-year media rights cycle till 2023. This is considerably higher than the Rs 43 crore per match that Star paid in the previous rights cycle. It is also higher than the Rs 54.49 crore being paid by Star for the Indian Premier League (IPL) media rights.
Star India chairman & CEO and 21st Century Fox Asia President Uday Shankar said: “Star India is excited to continue its deep association with Team India and Team BCCI, to bring this amazing sport of Indian cricket to over a billion fans across the world. Cricket is special, but when Team India plays in front of Indian fans, it becomes even more special. That’s why winning these rights again gives us a very special feeling. We see this as an important milestone in our journey to build India into a sporting nation with cricket at the heart of it all.”
