As per the latest report by the ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB), no licence has been issued in November, though several new and name change applications are awaiting approval.
In last 11 months, I&B Ministry issued 45 TV channel licences, 30 less that what was issued in 2016.The ministry has also cancelled 66 licences in 2017, as on 30 November.
The total TV channel licences issued by the MIB under the BJP government stands at 215 during June 2014 until November 2017. Minister of State Rajyavardhan Singh Rathoretold the Parliament in March that more than 100 TV channel licences were awaiting clearance with the ministry.
In the latest development, the MIB sent a reference to TRAI to look into the issues surrounding the uplinking and downlinking licences of TV channels and come up with recommendations.
Consequently, TRAI has recently issued a consultation paper on ‘Issues relating to Uplinking and Downlinking Television Channels in India’.
