CQ-Police arrested Bengali channel MD

Kolkata Police on 25th June have arrested the MD of a Bengali Channel, in a cheating case in Kolkata. The accused has been identified as Gautam Mazumdar, the managing director of a local Bengali satellite channel.
It was alleged in December 2013 that he, along with his staff, had entered into a conspiracy and induced a teleserial director identified as Pranab Bannerjee to produce a comedy serial that was to be aired on the channel. The deal was sealed for Rs 6 lakh. The telecast was to be completed by 2012. But after airing some episodes, it was taken off air. Two cheques were issued thereafter. However, both were dishonoured," said Gaurav Sharma DC (southeast) Kolkata Police.
Interestingly, the police probe team found that the accused was also involved in a chit-fund scam in Odisha. A case in this regard was registered at the Sahadevkhunta police station in the Balasore district in April this year under IPC sections 420/468/406/409/34/120(b) and section 4,5,6, Prize Chit Banning Scheme and Money Circulation Act and Section 6 of the OPID Act. "Odisha police has been informed about the arrest of Mazumdar," said joint CP (crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh.
The fresh arrest comes at a time when the CBI itself says that their investigation was "on the right track". The claim came after CBI tracked down two key operatives in the Saradha chain — a man from Elgin Road who received huge stacks of cash from the Midland Park Saradha office in 2011 in the run-up to the assembly polls in Bengal and a close aide of a top political leader who used to visit the Saradha office every week. His entry, along with a "few other influential" people, in the office was never entered in the visitors' log book, a must in all other instances.
