Google reports internet users in India to triple by 2014

A report that came out on 16 September suggests that Google expects India’s Internet users to triple by 2014 as telecom carriers invest in high-speed wireless infrastructure and smartphones become cheaper.
With just eight percent of its 1.2-billion populations online, India is already the third-largest Internet market by users, behind China and the United States.

Google’s country head in India, Rajan Anandan, said the company predicts India will reach at least 300 million Internet users by 2014, up from about 100 million now. He also said that though India has an emerging audience but still Google and other internet companies are unable to capitalize due to government’s regulatory hurdles acting as constraints.
In addition to this, he also emphasized the need to bring out smartphones at affordable prices for the Indian masses to give a push to the internet usage.
