On 27 March 2018, the Supreme Court refused to extend the last date (March 31) for linking of Aadhaar with government schemes and benefits (subsidies). The SC also made it clear that indefinite deadline will remain same till further order for mandatory linking of Aadhaar with bank accounts, mobile phones and other non-subsidy services.
The apex court said: "We will not pass any interim order at this stage." The bench added that the petitioner may argue this aspect in their rejoinder submissions.
As a matter of fact, March 31 was set as deadline by the SC on December 15, 2017.
Senior advocate Shyam Divan stated that the deadline of March 31 be extended as it was highly unlikely that the hearing in the case challenging the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar Act will be concluded.
