Speaking at the News18 ‘Rising India Summit’ in New Delhi, the Union minister for information and broadcasting Ms. Smriti Irani said that the government is thinking about the possibility of a framework to monitor and regulate online news. But the Minister also cautioned that at the same time, regulating digital and social media requires a balanced and a very delicate sense of judgement.
She added that the current regulations on online content are not clear with regard to news and broadcast content material.
She said that the Ministry is working on a “code of conduct” and perhaps draft legislation too that it will be “incumbent upon online media agencies” to follow.
She expressed her concerns over fake news to defame and demean, and the tendency of certain journalists and media personalities to cross the very fine line between news and views.
