OTT players do not want to be regulated

After releasing its recommendations on net neutrality, the telecom regulator TRAI said it will soon release consultation paper on OTT. This has irked OTT companies as they do not like the idea of being regulated.

Truecaller, an OTT app, said that it opposes regulation of communication apps. The demand of OTT players is being opposed by telcos as want a level playing field.

Kari Krishnamurthy, vice-president, brand and partnerships at caller identification app Truecaller, said, “The regulation virtually kills many promising entities. We need to support an open Internet. That spirit should always be maintained.”

According to OTT players, regulation will finish smaller players and hurt innovation. “It will also increase cost of operations which will only allow the larger, moneyed apps to survive.”

According to Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), “Any licensing or registration requirement on content service providers will have extreme negative repercussions, especially with regard to innovations and newer technologies.”
