Over 5 mn set-top boxes shipped to India in Q1

India registered 5.3 million units of set-top box shipments in the first quarter of 2013, with Skyworth the market leading manufacturer, according to new report.
Research and Markets says that the mandatory introduction of cable TV digitisation, conditional access systems, popularity of direct-to-home (DTH) satellite TV, and the declining prices of set-top boxes (STBs) are fuelling the latter's growth in India.

"With Government directing rules to completely digitise the entire pay-TV market by 2014, the demand for STBs is expected to increase exponentially in the coming years," said Research and Markets.
The majority of the total cable TV subscribers in India are still using analogue-based networks, however researchers expect a shift towards the digital cable TV platform. The introduction of high definition (HD) channels and connected TVs is also expected to play their part in increasing the market for digital television viewing in India.
The STB manufacturers considered in the report's dataset comprise: Arion ,Chanchong, Cisco, Coship, Dbc Technologies, Entropic, Fujian Newland Communication, Globecast, Goodtv, Gospell Digital Technology, Indieon, Indigital, Inovo, Intermedia Cable Communication, Jiuzhou, Manthan, Mars, Mstar Semiconductor Inc, Mybox, Neptune, Pace, Samsung, Selteka, Shenzen Gobetter, Shenzhen Veisat Technology, Siliocontechone, Skynet, Skyworth and Tccl.
Around 85% of set-top boxes in India are imported, due to the cost advantage enjoyed by the foreign players.
