Media can not be uncontrolled; Justice Markandey Katju

Press Council of India's chairman Justice Markandey Katju on Sunday, 21 July 2013 advised the media to discourage persons and forces raking up issues like 'Hindu Rashtravad' and asked journalists to expose elements trying to divide the society by raising such issues. "Such an act is anti-national in a country with secular structure." However, Justice Katju made it clear that it was his personal view and he was not associated with any political outfit.
Talking to reporters at a meet hosted by Kashi Patrakar Sangh at Paradkar Bhawan on Sunday evening, he said, "I am secular." Stating that the country was passing through a crucial stage wherein feudal structure was being replaced by a new society in the making, he said, "Making of a new society will take at least two decades. It is crucial a phase. Media has to play an important role by encouraging scientific and moral values to keep the society united."

Lamenting that the issue of bringing electronic media under PCI had been lingering on due to protests from media houses, he said, "In a democratic structure where the accountability of all sections, including politicians, judiciary, lawyers, civil servants and others, is fixed, why not have model code of conduct for journalists of such section of media?"
The PCI chief explained that after a terrorist attack in the country, channels mention names of terrorist group that had owned up the responsibility. "Possibility of involvement of a mischievous element in sending mail or fax to claim responsibility for any attack cannot be denied. In a hurry to air such claims, these channels cast doubt on the role of a particular section of society which is not good for the country," he said and added, "I am not against freedom of media but this should not be uncontrolled." Katju said that the country would have to grow as modern industrialized nation to become a developed country.
