HC seeks status report on installation of STBs

A Division Bench of the A.P. High Court comprising Justice N.V.Ramana and Justice Vilas Afzul Purkar on 27 June 2013 directed the Central government to file a status report regarding the implementation of the statutory regulations pertaining to digitalisation of TV signals and installation of Set Top Box (STB). The Bench announced that the judgment in this case would be delivered soon.
The Bench was dealing with a writ petition filed by Chalasani Narendra Vara Prasad, senior journalist and rights activist. He complained that the STBs were not being supplied by the multi-system operators at reasonable rates and they were not available in the market.

The Bench expressed deep anguish at the attitude of the government in not filing the counter-affidavit in a writ petition regarding compensation to farmers who are affected by the spurious seed, etc. The Bench was dealing with a writ petition filed by farmers who challenged the action of the government in appointing a committee comprising three senior officers to determine the compensation.  The case was filed in April 2012 and since then the government has not filed counter-affidavit. The Bench asked the respondent to file the counter and granted time till next week. The court ordered Commissioner/Director Agriculture to be present in court next week to explain the delay.
Justice Noushad Ali directed the police authorities to continue armed police escort to Dwarampudi Chandrasekhar Reddy, former MLA, at his own cost for a week.
The judge was dealing with a writ petition of the YSRC leader who resigned as MLA recently.  Mr. Chandrasekhar Reddy said the security provided to him had been withdrawn after he quit the ruling party. The judge directed the authorities to reassess the threat perception and directed the continuance of the security for another week.
Justice Ramesh Ranganathan admitted a writ petition questioning the procedure prescribed for allotting ranks to students in the JEE.
The new guidelines mandate that the ranking is to be done based on percentile marks obtained by the candidates. Rahul and another student filed the writ petition.
The judge refused to grant stay on the ongoing selection process but made it clear that any selection would be subject to further orders in the writ petition.
