Govt revokes registration of 2 operators

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on 30 August said it had revoked the registration of two Multi System Operators (MSOs) — Home Cable Network (P) Ltd and Swami Cable Network —for non submission of Digital Addressable System (DAS) related data.
As part of its regular monitoring of the first phase of digitisation in the four metros, the Ministry regularly seeks information from MSOs to gauge the preparedness of the industry players and deployment of set-top boxes in households.

“The non submission of data by these MSOs is indicative of their lack of seriousness to pursue their business as per the terms and conditions of their registration. The Ministry has, in the overall context of implementation of DAS, taken a serious view of the non-compliance of directions of the Ministry by these two MSOs and has therefore after due notice revoked their registration as MSOs,” the Ministry said.
The Ministry said that timely availability of accurate data with regard to the seeding of set-top boxes by MSOs is critical for it to ensure digital switch over within the timeframe as well as for taking mid-course corrections, if necessary.
Meanwhile, Information and Broadcasting Secretary Uday Kumar Varma said on 30 August that the industry stakeholders need to step up the digitisation process to meet the first phase deadline.
Speaking at a CII industry meet on digitisation, he said, “Out of the estimated 13 million television homes, about 34-35 per cent have been digitised so far.”
He said that MSO’s need to increase the pace of installing set top boxes to meet the first phase deadline. Multi system operators and cable operators have assured the Government of meeting the deadline and said there was need to translate this assurance into action. “The Government is committed to digitisation and there is no possibility of further extension,” he added.
