Spam text messages on the decline, report

There has been a drastic fall in the number of unwanted telemarketing messages on mobile phones, according to a report by network security solutions firm Cloudmark.
Some operators have reported a 99 per cent decline in complaints about unwanted messages. Mobile subscribers were previously receiving as many as 20 spam messages a day.

According to the report, the decline has come about because of tough Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) regulations.
“In response to growing concerns, TRAI implemented a spam reporting service to which users could report unsolicited text messages or calls. Most recently, a resolution from the end of 2012 asked all mobile operators to block spam messages originating from within their network using intelligent, signature-based content filters,” the report from Cloudmark said.
The report said that currently, SMS spam messages in India were primarily related to advertising. Typically, these messages are the kind seen in newspaper classifieds. SMS texts related to property deals and job offers are among the major spammers.
