‘Unmediated: Essays on Media, Culture and Cinema,’ a book authored by Sashi Kumar and published by Tulika Books, was launched at the Asian College of Journalism (ACJ) on 2nd May evening under the auspices of the Madras Book Club.
Through the book, Sashi Kumar, Chairman of the Media Development Foundation which runs the ACJ, presented his reflections on the ecology of the media, including film, print and television, over the span of his three-decade-long career as a media practitioner. Some of the themes he addressed include the agency of the media, aspects of freedom of expression, coercive forces within this rubric and cognitive shifts triggered by technology to name a few.
Robin Jeffrey, a research scholar of South Asia from the National University of Singapore, likened the experience of reading the book to that of ‘embarking on a voyage into a sea of ideas.’ He mentioned that it was the diversity in themes discussed, informed passion with which these were approached and the wit in the writing which made for an enriching read.
