TDSAT dismisses Star Sport petition against Hathway Cable

The Telecom Dispute Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) on 1st April has rejected the petition filed by the Star Sports against multi-system operator (MSO) Hathway Cable & Datacom for carrying unencrypted signals in Mumbai and Delhi, which fall under digital addressable system (DAS).
The sportscaster had in its petition contended that the MSO was distributing unencrypted signals through four IRD boxes in DAS areas of Mumbai and Delhi. Star Sports had also made a claim of Rs 7 crore ( Rs 70 million) on the MSO for loss of revenue due to transmission of unencrypted signals.

However, the tribunal refused to entertain Star Sports’ contention after Hathway clarified that it had nothing to do with the four IRD boxes in question. The MSO also listed the IRD boxes in its possession through which it is transmitting the signals of the four channels.
Once the tribunal was convinced by Hathway that it had nothing to do with those boxes through which unencrypted signals were being transmitted, it decided to dispose of Star Sports’ petition while allowing it to switch off the four IRD boxes.
