ABS-CBN looks to 2015 for mobile TV break even

Philippines broadcasting group ABS-CBN expects its new mobile TV service to break even in 2015, once it reaches a subscription base of 2 million.
The media holding company currently has 250,000 mobile customers and predicts to have one million by the end of the year for its prepaid services, launched late in 2013 through an agreement with Globe Telecom.

"Right now, activation is picking up to 2,500 [accounts] per day. We started with around 700 per day," Aldrin Cerrado, chief financial officer, ABS-CBN told the Daily Inquirer. "There is still a possibility we will hit break even faster than projected," he added. Currently losses stand at around PHP900 million (US$20.2 million), the newspaper reports.
The company – which posted a 25% rise to PHP2.1 billion ($47.25 million) in group profit in early April – hopes to attract customers to the mobile service by offering exclusive content, as well as programming aired on ABS-CBN's flagship television channels.
