The government has approved the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) recommendations on green energy applications.
As per the regulator's recommendations, about 50 per cent of all rural towers and 20 per cent of urban towers are to be operated on hybrid power by 2015. Further, 33 per cent of urban towers are to be powered by this medium by 2020.With the approval of TRAI's recommendations, service providers are required to develop a carbon credit policy in line with carbon credit norms. The objective of the carbon credit policy is ensure that operators exceed a maximum of 50 per cent over carbon footprint levels in the base year in rural areas and a 66 per cent target over the carbon foot print levels of the base year in urban areas by 2020.
The year 2011 would be considered as the base year for calculating existing carbon footprints. Also, service providers will be required to disclose the carbon footprints of their network twice a year. Further, these companies should aim at reducing the carbon emissions of their mobile network year-on year.
