Spar Between Operators And Customers Delays Cable TV Digitisation

Kanpur is one of the 38 cities in Phase-II of digitization and as residents are getting ready for digital cable TV which must be completed before March 31, MSOs are forcing the cable operators to charge extra amount from subscribers based on the new packages as well as demand payment for STBs.
Cable operators in the city are finding it difficult to extract more money from people who are reluctant to even pay for the STBs. This process of persuading the subscribers to pay more for the digital services and realizing the payments from them may cause delay in digitizing the city. The situation is very similar in other cities too.

The total cable television connections in the city are approximately 2.8 lakh while the target is to install three lakh STBs. Apart from analogue cable, approximately 50,000 users are using direct-to-home (DTH) services. From January till date, just 90,000 STBs have been installed in city. Many cable operators have claimed that not even 25 percent of subscribers are willing to get STBs installed.
