Set-top boxes may soon be available in BEE

BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) is considering certifying Set-top boxes for their star ratings based on power consumption.
The boxes, which are used by DTH service providers and multi-system operators, generally are imported from China and South Korea which do not have any specifications and certification for their energy efficiency levels.

A special body has been set-up by BEE to study and develop standards and a star rating model for these boxes.
According to Mr S.P. Garnaik, Energy Economist, BEE, the panel has now come out with a standard and a star rating model and it is now being circulated among various stakeholders. “It is expected to be finalised in the next 4-5 months' time,” he said.
To start with, the agency will award star ratings only to set-top boxes used in the DTH sector. However, he said cable TV set-top boxes too will soon come under the radar.
