CQ- Govt declares STB as telecom network equipment

Government has declared Set-top-boxes (STBs) as telecom network equipment, a move that will give a big push to domestic manufacturing of STBs in India.
The decision is expected to help domestic manufacturers produce STBs at competitive rates by availing tax exemptions.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar says that there are Indian manufacturers who produce high quality STBs for export to other countries like USA and efforts would be made to encourage them to produce for domestic consumption.
“We have already declared set-top box as telecom network equipment,” he told PTI.
Javadekar also said that the government will make efforts to encourage domestic manufacturers to produce for domestic consumption.
The minister said that he has spoken to the telecom minister on the issue of declaring STBs as telecom network equipment.
Since he took over the I&B Ministry, Javadekar has laid special emphasis on domestic manufacturing of STBs. Earlier in a public meeting he said that our ministry is planning to bring a policy which will facilitate the indigenous manufacturing of STBs and This declaration is one step ahead toward this.
The minister believes that domestic STB manufacturing will help to create jobs. Currently, the majority of STBs are imported from countries like China, Korea and Taiwan.
According Adnan Llham Dhuliawala of Inideon, a manufacturer of STBs in Pune, Maharastra, this announcement has come as a big relief to indigenous manufacturers as it will cutdown the cost of STBs by 14-18 per cent as compared to imported STBs.
