CQ-Mumbai police raids MSO 7 Star for carrying ‘unregistered’ channels

MUMBAI: Acting on a tip-off, Mumbai police raided and seized equipment of multi-system operator (MSO) 7 Star Digital Network from its control room in the western suburb of Versovaf for running unregistered TV channels on its cable TV network.
Police had received a number of complaints about the MSO running unregistered channels.During the raid a number of equipment was seized under Section 11 of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995. Section 11 empowers police to seize equipment used for operating a cable television network in case an authorised officer has reason to believe that the provisions of Sections 3, [4A], 5, 6 or 8 have been or are being contravened by any cable operator.
After investigation, Police found that eight ‘unregistered’ channels—BBC America, HBO Family, Show Beyond, Sky Movies, MM2, Showtime, MBC Action and OHM Comedy were running on the network. Two other channels were server based, hence not covered by the Cable TV Act. None of these unregistered channels are banned by the government.
According to downloading guidelines for TV channels, all channels desirous of beaming in India must get registered with I&B ministry. This is applicable to all satellite channels.Streamed channels on the internet and local video channels are not yet regulated for registeration.
No arrests were made in this connection, but the police would file a complaint with the magistrate under the Cable TV Ac 1995.
According to reports ,the police may also write to the ministry to issue a show cause notice to the network as to why its licence should not be cancelled.
