Ad watchdog uphold 99 complaints in February 2014

Advertising sector watchdog the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) upheld 99 complaints it received against 136 advertising in the month of February 2014. Along with product advertisements, product packaging was also misleading in many of the products.
The ad watchdog’s Consumer Complaints Council (CCC) pulled up 80 advertisers in the health and personal care category as misleading or false or not adequately or scientifically substantiated, hence violating the ASCI Code. Some health-care products and services ads also contravened provisions of the Drug & Magic Remedies Act.

Some of the advertisers that were pulled up by the CCC included Fat 2 Fit, Genesis Wellness Clinic Private Ltd, Dabur India Ltd, Colorbar Cosmetics Pvt. Ltd, Procter & Gamble Hygiene & Health Care Ltd, Eureka Labs Ltd, Marico Ltd, and Lotus Eye Hospital & Institute.
In the education sector, print ads by five advertisers were not substantiated, hence considered violating the ASCI Guidelines for Advertising of Educational Institutions.
The CCC also pulled up six ads in the food and beverages segment for contravening the ASCI’s Code. Some of these advertisers included Surya Food & Agro Ltd, Marico Ltd and Torino.
