Two million subscribers in Phase I & II cities may face a black out with immediate effect as The Telecom Regulatory of India (TRAI) has decided to curtail the viewing of channels at such households that have not filled in the Consumer Application Forms (CAF)
At an emergency meeting on 10 July, TRAI directed Multi System Operators (MSOs) to curb telecast of channels to such households.
MSOs will either enforce a two-hour daily blackout or will only transmit Free to Air (FTA) channels for such subscribers.
TRAI had earlier threatened to completely black out cable TV of those consumers who failed to fill the CAF by July 10. This date was further extended to 25 July.
This move has been taken to give the consumer another chance to view popular pay channels.
LCOs say that TRAI is acting against the interests of consumers. CAF forms are not available and even if they are available, they are in English language that many consumers do not understand.
Operators have also shown resentment that TRAI was talking to MSOs and bypassing the local cable operators who run the entire cable TV business.
